A bit of history
Fragneto Monforte has ancient origins, dating back to the Samnite era. The territory that today hosts the municipality was inhabited since the pre-Roman era, as demonstrated by the numerous archaeological finds discovered in the area. In particular, the area was an important transit and defense center during the Samnite wars, thanks to its strategic position.
In the Middle Ages, the town developed around the castle, which became the central point of the community. During the Norman period, the area came under the control of several noble families, who influenced its development and organization. The name “Monforte” was added in the 13th century, to distinguish it from other centers in the area. Over the centuries, Fragneto Monforte has lived under the control of various dominations, including the Swabian, Angevin and Aragonese, and has undergone numerous transformations, both urban and cultural.
The history of the town is also closely linked to religion, with the presence of numerous churches that testify to the importance of faith in the daily life of the community. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo, for example, is an important example of architecture.

Curiosity
Among the most characteristic traditions of Fragneto Monforte there is certainly the “Festa di San Michele Arcangelo”, which is celebrated every year in September with a series of religious and folkloristic events. During this festival, the town comes alive with processions, popular songs and typical dances, involving the entire community.
Furthermore, in October there is the most important gathering organized in Southern Italy in which over 25 hot air balloons from all over Europe participate every year. There are food stands with typical local products, music, meetings, conferences and much more.
